Reel Review: Season 2 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Brings Even More Drama Than The First
Is it too soon to say that this is my favorite season so far? This season had me glued to my TV. Every episode was binged. This season had a lot more drama than last season.
Last season we also went in knowing exactly what we were getting. The swinging scandal took over TikTok for a while and in the trailers they talked about it. In a way, I was almost disappointed too because this season we had a new member try to join MomTok, Miranda. She was a part of the swinging scandal and ended up divorcing her husband, who was a part of it as well. After being divorced, she tried to join the group and in a way I feel like that would have been a better storyline last season, especially since this season was more focused on the drama between Demi and… everyone else.
Demi was the best and worst villain. You could tell that she wanted to be the leader of the group and overtake Taylor’s role and when Taylor called her out on it, she got defensive and started getting angry with Taylor. The worst part for me was when Demi yelled at Taylor’s mom. If anyone spoke to my mom that way, I would be so mad. I just hope we get to see more between her and Marciano next season too because I feel like there’s more to that than she’s leading on, especially since she sent a cease and desist letter to Jen.
Taylor’s storyline this season was so sad. It was hard to watch when her family was speaking to her as if she was doing something wrong by simply living her life. It wasn’t her fault that Dakota cheated on her while she stayed loyal to him. I am glad she cleared up the swinging scandal though. She got Miranda to admit that they were swinging but gave very detailed depictions of what was going on, which was crazy to me. I hope we get to see more of her next season. It did feel like we got less of her this season compared to last.
You could tell that the show found its voice a little bit more this season compared to last season. Last season was interesting as well, but this one had more drama and you could tell the producers had more influence on the things said and done on the show, more this season than last season. Which I will say, can we please get fewer truth boxes next season? That was the worst part of this season in my opinion because it seemed like they wanted a specific result from the truth box, but they didn’t want to get creative with it.
I think each season, a few of the girls find their voice and feel more open and comfortable in speaking, and this season, it was Mikayla. Last season she was very quiet and not super into the drama, just kind of in the shadows, but this season I feel like she stood up for herself and we got to hear more about her story which I appreciated because I like her a lot.
Next season is set up so well, at the end when they brought up Marciano and he said that the story about him and Jessi making out at TomTom, I mean it’s a great set-up in my opinion because now you’re like “what?” I will say, though, that it seems production is setting Jessi up for a downfall, but I think it’ll be interesting because I wonder how much tension it’ll cause, especially between Jessi and Demi.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Whitney returning. It seems she and her husband did some work on themselves, which is great, but it does seem a bit strange for her to be begging to be back in MomTok when she was so awful to them.
Now the biggest thing that I was most excited for this season was the return of Jen and her husband Zac. After watching the show, though, I wish he hadn’t returned. It seemed like she was ready to walk away from their relationship, especially because Zac was so awful to her, but when she got pregnant, it almost seemed like she became stuck in the relationship for the child now. Him dropping out of medical school was interesting too because I wonder if he saw how much money Jen was making from all of this and realized his bills could be paid for the rest of his life, but I don’t know what’s going on with them personally because Jen to take a step back from production a few episodes into the season.
Mayci’s story was so sad. We haven’t gotten to hear or see a whole lot of her personal life other than the start of her business ventures, but upon hearing about her first husband’s death; I felt for her and wanted to reach out and give her a hug. I’m hoping that we get to see more of her personal life in the next season too.
Season 2 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is now streaming on Hulu.
