Reel Review: Forever is the Coming of Age Story The World Needs Right Now

An all new drama series just hit Netflix and we need to talk about it! Forever dives into the lives of two young teenagers as they discover a world first love, first heartbreak, and everything in between.

The series stars Micheal Cooper Jr. as Justin, a struggling teen hoping to find his place in the world as he deals with a family who puts a ton of pressure on him including his upcoming college decision. When Justin decides to attend a party with his friends, the last person he expects to meet there is his old crush from elementary school, Keisha (Lovie Simone).

Keisha is an outgoing, smart, and wild spirit. After being hurt in the past and having a viral video leaked online, Keisha decides that a new start is needed in order to have a successful future at school away from her hometown. What she doesn’t anticipate is falling for Justin and embarking on a journey of firsts together.

The series does a unique job at storytelling between the two perspectives. As we are taken along the journey, we experience Justin and Keisha’s awkward firsts together which are also followed by their progression into adulthood. Cooper Jr. and Simone showcase a wide range of talents in their breakout roles and made for some amazing chemistry on screen.

Forever also focuses on many real world problems and touches on mature themes that drive the story; from racial indifferences to family dynamics and even miscommunication. For a show that focuses on teenage progression, the parents actually play a crucial role for both Justin and Keisha’s characters; which was very refreshing to see.

Ultimately, we see both characters grow into better versions of themselves because of the other. Justin and Keisha’s love story is nothing short of epic and action packed; all up until the very end when they go their separate ways for college. Now we are left patiently waiting for a season 2 announcement!

Forever was the perfect binge-watch that had us captivated from the beginning to the very end. The show not only touches on real world themes, but portrays a true Black culture and combines it with one catchy soundtrack! Overall, Forever is a story that the world needs right now and one that you should add to your list immediately!

Forever is available on Netflix now.
