Reel Review: Ransom Canyon is Completely Captivating and Bingeworthy

Ransom Canyon is Netflix’s newest small-town drama series and is sure to be your next show of the Summer! From hot cowboys to shocking plot twists, this show has it all. (We seriously binged 10 episodes in one night!)

The show follows saddle-rancher Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) and his attempt to salvage chaos that is brought into town. When a money-hungry water company wants to build pipelines on his property, Staten is among the many ranchers in Ransom whose land is being threatened.

Staten also finds himself at a low point in life while struggling with the deaths of his wife and son. He must rely on the people in town to save him, including his late wife’s best friend Quinn (Minka Kelly). Dunhamel and Kelly’s chemistry makes for the perfect slow burning relationship, while they are also able to portray two strong and independent characters.

Things take an even shadier turn when Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher) walks into town with nothing but business on his mind. Working in secret with Staten’s brother-in-law (and rival) Davis (Eoin Macken), the two plan to get the town on board with their new pipeline campaign. Yancy’s plans fall short when he walks into Quinn’s bar and discovers the sassy bartender, Ellie (Marianly Tejada).

Schumacher’s character arc is arguably the most interesting. Yancy comes in as the town’s ‘bad guy’ but we quickly see a turn around in his character as he discovers the one thing he wasn’t looking for; a family. Yancy and Ellie were couple goals and had us rooting for them the whole time… up until that twist of ending (he was married the whole time?!)

The series also has an underlying mystery to uncover, as Staten suspects his son’s death was not an accident. We are constantly given smaller clues throughout the episodes that tie into a big ‘who done it’ mystery. And what we learned from the show’s main message; no one is who they say they are.

Ransom Canyon was absolutely phenomenal in its writing, planned-out storyline, and complex characters. Fans of Virgin River, Yellowstone, and even My Life with the Walter Boys are sure to love this new western. The show even left us off with broken relationships, bad guys on the loose, and one totally unexpected death that will shock everyone. After that ending, we are definitely rooting for a second season!

Ransom Canyon is available to binge on Netflix now!
