Reel Review: Borderline is a Thriller Comedy with a Killer Soundtrack
Get ready to play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse in Magnolia Pictures newest film Borderline!
The film stars Samara Weaving and Ray Nicholson to tell the story inspired by the lyrics of Madonna’s classic song “Borderline.” Similar to the vibe of the song, the film is creepy, menacing, and a bit comedic in its timing.
Weaving plays Sofia, a 90’s pop star with an eerily obsessed stalker-fan. After escaping from a mental institution, Paul (Ray Nicholson) is back for one thing only: Sofia. Desperate to prove his love, Paul’s delusions run wild as he breaks into her home, plans a wedding, and attempts multiple murders all in one night.
The film showcases a wide range of talent between its leading actors including Samara Weaving, Ray Nicholson, and Eric Dane. Playing Sofia’s bodyguard, Dane delivers incredible fight scenes and in turn, becomes Paul’s number one enemy. Weaving’s portrayal of Sofia is that of a strong female lead, she can hold her own and fight both the physical and psychological war that is Nicholson’s character.
Arguably the best performance is delivered by Ray Nicholson, who depicts a sociopath with incredibly crazy fantasies. Taking the role of obsessive fan to the next level, Nicholson delivers a dangerously good delusion that almost makes you root for the villain.
The film’s soundtrack only elevates the already thrilling and comedic story. The iconic songs from the 90’s will take you back, while the anxiety-inducing plot will push you forward. Tying in some jaw-dropping fight scenes and a classic power ballad at the end, this film is everything you will need to get your blood pumping!
Borderline is available on Prime Video and for digital download now.
