The Official Trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps Is Finally Here!

What a fantastic suprise to wake up to this morning! Marvel Studios released the first trailer for their highly awaited film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and we are fired up (pun intended) for this one! Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach star as Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm. Let’s break down this super trailer that finally introduces us to Marvel’s first family.

The trailer places heavy focus on Kirby’s Sue Storm, who we learn is pregnant in the film! Now that I think about it, Sue being pregnant makes the title of this film make way more sense—wink wink. When she and Reed arrive late to family dinner, Ben and Johnny put the puzzle together pretty quickly. This moment showed off the adorable sibling dynamic between Johnny and Sue, and showcased a little bit of Johnny’s token arrogance when he smarts off to Reed. All in good fun, of course! However, Sue being pregnant raises the personal stakes exponentially. We hardly see motherhood showcased in Marvel’s female leads, other than through Agatha Harkness or Wanda Maximoff, so it’ll be really interesting to watch Sue’s story as she navigates early motherhood on top of saving the world.

The trailer opens with a narration from a talk show host, reminiscent of Johnny Carson recapping how The Fantastic Four went from regular astronauts to super-human beings due to a space mission gone wrong. Fans are treated to an up-close peak at Thing, the rock formation Ben gets permanently transformed into after the mission. However, it seems like he’s loved by society, as is the entire team. The film is beautifully shot, with retro television motifs emulated throughout the trailer, such as the rounded, smaller aspect ratio of earlier television models and rich colors.

Pascal and Kirby’s chemistry is off the charts, and the dynamic of the entire group truly shines in this trailer. As meteorites plummet from the sky, the group looks terrified. The special effects look fantastic (pun intended once again) whereas lately, Marvel has gotten some criticism for their rushed CGI that often looks unfinished. I appreciate that Marvel seems to have taken their time on this story, not just for special effects, but for overall storytelling, styling, character development, etc. This could be thanks to Matt Shakman, who famously took the world by storm with WandaVision. His storytelling prowess was a godsend to Marvel post Avengers: Endgame. With him in the directors seat for this story, I have full faith that I’ll be just as mind-blown as I was when WandaVision first graced my Disney+ account.

I love that Sue is being showcased as the heart and leader of the team in this trailer. While Reed is usually the leader of the group, Sue’s heart and warmth is what truly keeps their bond so strong as a family and as a team. Pascal’s iteration of Reed seems soft-spoken, and honestly, sort of tortured by his own genius. It’s incredibly reminiscent of Tony Stark, but without the cockiness. This makes me even more fascinated to watch when Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU as Dr. Doom.

Julia Garner surfs onto the screen, literally. She plays the infamous Silver Surfer who has deemed Earth unworthy to exist. We then get quick glimpses of Galactus, a cosmic entity that consumes planets looming over Earth ready to feast. While we didn’t get a full look at the monster, we know that Ralph Ineson is playing him. The score over the trailer is gorgeous and flat-out epic. This film truly feels like a superhero homecoming for Marvel as they return to their roots: making spectacular films that showcase the strength of their heroes and the human spirit—with, of course, some epic fight scenes, romance, jokes, and explosions thrown in.

We’re so excited for this film! Stay tuned for more coverage from us and be sure to catch The Fantastic Four: First Steps when it flies into theaters July 25.
