Reel News: The Buccaneers Are Back, Babe!

Is everyone okay after that amazing, beautiful, epic, and absolutely thrilling trailer? The beloved ladies of The Buccaneers are finally back for season two, and we can hardly contain our excitement! I don’t think I’ll ever come down from the high of hearing Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” playing over the first look and then ending it with a quick glimpse of Leighton Meester’s mystery character. Let’s break down everything we know about the second season of Apple TV+’s hit period drama, The Buccaneers.

Where Did We Leave Off?

The finale of season one saw Nan (Kristine Froseth) sacrifice her chance at true love to save her sister, Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse). Nan married Theo, the dreamy Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers), and is now a glowing duchess. But is everything happily ever after? Nan’s heart still belongs to Theo’s best friend, Guy (Matthew Broome), who bravely ran away with Jinny to protect her—and her unborn child—from her abusive husband, Lord James Seadown (Barney Fishwick). With Nan’s newfound power as a duchess, she’ll hopefully be able to shield her sister from his clutches. Poor Theo has no idea that, for Nan, this marriage was one of convenience rather than a love match.

You VS. The Guy She Told You Not To Worry About

See what we did there? Season two finds Nan trying her best to adapt to married life as a duchess, but it’s not smooth sailing. The trailer gives glimpses of some steamy moments between Theo and Nan, but lust and admiration aren’t enough to keep Nan’s mind off Guy. My heart dropped when “Good Luck, Babe!” started playing over the trailer. I can’t think of a better song to symbolize Nan’s inner turmoil in season two.

Jinny and Guy are in a gorgeous coastal town hiding from Lord Seadown. Jinny has given birth and Guy is sporting a breakup beard. He too can’t get his mind off Nan. I love a good love triangle, but I don’t know if I can stomach watching Theo get his heart broken, and when they do, a full-on crash out from Theo will be completely justified. Quick shots reveal that Nan will reunite with Guy and Jinny at some point, but I’m curious to see how much of the season they’re apart. I’m even more curious to watch Guy and Jinny live together. I can’t think of two more different individuals to be roommates.

Oh Lord, Get Him Out Of Here!

My roommates and I visibly wept when Nan sacrificed her dream life to save Jinny, and it turned into utter sobbing when Taylor Swift’s “Long Live” started playing over the final scene. The pure hatred I feel for Lord Seadown is visceral, and I loved every second of Nan standing up to him in the trailer. Literal chills ran down my spine when Nan told him, “You don’t deserve to do anything with my sister.” Seadown may be determined to find Jinny, but I don’t think Nan, Guy, the girls, or even Theo will ever let that happen.

Where Are Our Other Leading Ladies?

The best part of season one was the tight-knit friendships amongst the ladies. Aubri Ibrag, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, and Imogen Waterhouse have thankfully all returned for season two, and their storylines look fantastic. A super quick shot of Lizzy shows her donning a gorgeous wedding dress. I’m not sure who the lucky guy is, but she deserves a happy ending after her tumultuous experience with Seadown. Mabel’s closeted relationship with Honoria (Mia Threapleton) continues on but perhaps not completely in the shadows anymore! A shot of Honoria and Mabel sharing a smooch in front of the girls is shown with the girls cheering. Conchita and Richard (Josh Dylan) seem to be enjoying married life with children, and Nan’s adopted mother Paddy (Christina Hendricks) is stepping into her role of protecting the girls.

Shots of an etherial fairy-themed party are sprinkled throughout the trailer, and I am so excited to get a full glimpse of that episode! Season one’s wardrobe was stunning in its own right, but it looks like all the ladies are getting a style upgrade for season two.

While it looks like the women attend gorgeous parties, share some laughs, and fall in love, this season won’t be without turmoil. Quick shots of Lizzy and Jinny running frantically, someone wielding a gun, and relationships on the brink are all shown in the trailer’s final moments. Please, please, please don’t let the person with that gun be Seadown finding Jinny!

Are You My Mother?

The craziest part of the trailer was the final ten seconds where beloved Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester shows up and asks Paddy to introduce her and Nan. Given that Nan is wearing her wedding dress and that season one ended with Nan’s father revealing Nan’s birth mother was at the wedding, I’m pretty sure Meester will step into that maternal role. I’m curious to see Meester and Hendricks interact on the show, especially since one has known Nan her entire life, while the other has been unwillingly absent.
