Reel Talk: We Were Liars Cast Talks Prime Video’s Newest Book to Screen Mystery

Prime Video is bringing another book to life with their newest series We Were Liars. Candace King, Caitlin FitzGerald, David Morse, and Rahul Kohli sat down with Reel Talk & Reviews to discuss all the things about the upcoming adaptation!

The series follows the Sinclair family, who spend every Summer on their own private island. And while they may seem like a picture perfect family, everyone has their secrets. “It’s really a family show about family secrets that don’t necessarily know how to stay buried,” King teased.

Candace King and Caitlin FitzGerald play a sister duo, Bess and Penny Sinclair. “We really worked on our role as sisters, as they are not always kind to each other, and we wanted that to feel genuine,” FitzGerald said about working with King.

The actors also talked about bringing their characters to life with the help of author E. Lockhart and a whole team of writers. “Before we even stepped foot in front of a camera, we all had this big dinner together,” King said. “I think that it organically lent itself to us having this base foundation from which we could creatively grow.”

The series focuses on complications in family dynamics and shows how things can change overnight. FitzGerald talked about the Sinclair Family and her takeaway from their story. “If you feel like what you’re being told to do isn’t really in alignment with what you want, then it’s time to step away.”

King and FitzGerald weren’t the only two that felt connected to the Sinclairs and their story. Actors David Morse and Rahul Kohli talked about their experience and the importance of having an author on set with actors for an adaptation. “One of the things we appreciated the most is that E. Lockhart trusted her book to our show runners, and she had such a wonderful energy throughout the whole process,” Morse, who plays Harris Sinclair, said.

Rahul Kohli, who plays in-law Ed Patil, also spoke about E. Lockhart and the characters she created. “E. Lockhart came to me towards the end of my filming, and it was her seal of approval that I was doing Ed right and serving her character,” Kohli said. “That was a big deal and you don’t get to do that very often.”

With any book adaptation comes necessary changes from the novel to screenplay; but these actors truly feel that this story was served justice and was in good hands. They also can’t wait for a whole new audience of readers to see the show and meet the Sinclair family in their entirety. “I only want one thing from the audience, and that is to be entertained,” Kohli said. “As long as they feel part of that world, then it is a win for me.”

We Were Liars is out on Prime Video June 18!
