Reel Review: School Spirits Episode 6 Revolves Around Epic Kidnapping

School Spirits is back with episode 6 and Janet has officially been kidnapped by none other than our favorite living squad! Now trapped in a cabin in the middle of the woods, Simon, Nicole, Claire, and Xavier must take on the ultimate task of holding a spirit hostage.

With the true identity of Janet’s finally out, Simon, Nicole, Claire, and Xavier must now convince her to go back to Split River High to cross over and save Maddie’s body. These characters entangle themselves in an even greater mess when Nicole’s brother makes his way into the occasion. The perfectly timed comedic banter of these scenes make the characters feel like a true friend group. And we want to be a part of it!

Meanwhile, Maddie’s friends in the spirit world are preparing for Wally’s class reunion, which Wally is completely stoked for. This is seen in the most groovy and upbeat dance number of all time that episode 6 throws our way. Milo Manheim absolutely crushes the feel-good jock role and this dance number to “Let’s Dance” by David Bowey had us dancing right there alongside him!

Maddie is currently struggling with her place in the afterlife and with her feelings towards Janet. By now, we have gotten to understand Janet on a deeper level. Because of this, there is a bit of sympathy that comes with her needing to cross over in order for Maddie to get her life back. Jess Gabor has portrayed Janet very well, to a point where she has actually begun to feel like part of the squad. But as we know, these things can’t be this way forever.

Still on the lookout for Janet is her old teacher Mr. Martin, who has now disguised himself as the modern-day teacher, Mr. Anderson. The living squad kidnapping Janet may have been a blessing in disguise up until this point; as the troubled teacher cannot get a hold of her… or so we think.

By the end of episode 6, Janet finally confides in Simon and understands what needs to be done. Officially willing to go back to Split River High, she turns to leave the woods when none of than Mr. Martin is standing behind her (talk about jumpscare)! We are quickly transitioned over to Maddie, who has just discovered a secret portal hidden deep within the school. And these flashing lights on the exit sign could potentially be the only way out.

This episode deeply leaned into the comedic and lighthearted scenes, which was definitely needed to balance out how dense and complex the storyline of season 2 has been thus far. This season has also continued to highlight the raw talent this cast has. With only 2 more episodes of the season left, we cannot wait to see where the rest of Maddie’s journey leads to!

School Spirits season 2 episode 6 is out now on Paramount+.
