Reel Review: School Spirits Episode 5 Takes a Shocking and Romantic Turn

Episode 5 of School Spirits is officially out and adds more fuel to the fire (quite literally)! With Janet causing trouble and Mr. Martin missing, Maddie must unite both the living gang and the spirits to work together!

With Janet officially in Maddie’s body, Simon, Claire, Nicole, and Xavier decide to pay her a visit at her house. The sit down dinner brings tension between the living squad and Janet; as she tries her best to conceal her true identity, but fails as Simon catches on quickly. Simon has truly become the character you want to root for no matter what! Kristian Ventura and Peyton List convey this emotional strain in the already suspenseful kitchen sequence. Janet acting as ‘Maddie’ while holding a knife makes for an eerily scary combination!

In another interesting turn of events, we finally get to see each character in one room together! Simon and Maddie manage to get their respective squads to introduce themselves to one another. The switching between the living and the spirit perspectives make for a hilarious back and forth sequence. Even while dealing with a crisis, the banter between the actors is lighthearted and fun.

This episode also delved deeper into the romance of our favorite ship! Wally and Maddie manage to find some time alone at an indoor pool… and things get quite steamy! Milo Maheim is a total heartthrob (and had us all completely swooning). Manheim and List’s chemistry has grown significantly, and the pool scene further advances the emotional relationship between their characters.

Finally, the mystery of Mr. Martin is cracked when Wally and Maddie discover that he is hiding in the body of a living teacher, Mr. Anderson. And so it seems that what happened to Maddie, is happening yet again to someone else! The episode leaves us off with Janet being kidnapped and though we can’t see who did it, we are left only with assumptions. And so the drama continues!

Episode 5 of School Spirits was full of shocking surprises and romantic turns. We have begun to see these characters mature along with the actors’ performances. The story hasn’t seemed to lose its flair either; as each twist is just as interesting as the last. But for now, it seems that Maddie is still trapped inside a nightmare that may have just gotten a whole lot worse!

School Spirits episodes 1 - 5 are now available to stream on Paramount+.
